Dog Run Poll Results

From President Peter Starr:

Hello WMA members:

On Monday 6th October at Council the people were heard. The new Westmount Park dog run will be created next to the junior tennis courts and the bike path. It will be fenced and hedged for sound.

This solution was achieved in great part due to the efforts of the WMA and the 117 Westmounters who participated in the WMA poll. During the past four weeks the WMA visited all eight potential sites, evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of each location, sought new sites that might have been overlooked, and met with Westmount citizens and park users. Then, in informal talks with Mayor Trent and various councillors, and without revealing the results of our poll, we made them aware that the locations identified by Hodgins and Associates were not what the taxpayers wanted. The result was that we were successful in stopping the dog run from destroying what some people refer to as the “Serenity Garden” at the shuffleboard courts. I smile today when I think of Mrs Ruffman and Mrs Gundara, who approached us while we were touring the sites, and pleaded with us to assure them that their special oasis was not lost. The solution also ensures that residents near Landsdowne and Ste. Catherine will not have to deal with any more noise at what is to become Westmount’s busiest intersection.

I thank Mayor Trent for and the councillors for listening and for being open to the most acceptable solution, and I thank all the WMA board members who worked so tenaciously on this issue.

For your information, the results of our survey are as follows:

117 respondents

  • 70.94% said YES to a new dog run
  • 65.65% said NO to a dog run in the park
  • 98.29 % of the respondents live in Westmount
  • 86.51% of the respondents preferred dog run was Landsdowne
  • 19.52 % of the respondents preferred dog run was Sherbrooke and Melville.

Thank you again,
Peter
